What young Scouts wear
This page helps parents and youth members understand the Australian Scout uniform across every age section. The good news: one simple design grows with your child from Joeys to Venturers.
The core uniform
- The shirt. Each section has its own colour: tan (Joey Scouts 5–7), yellow (Cub Scouts 8–11), green (Scouts 11–14) and maroon (Venturers 14–18). Rovers (18–25) wear a red shirt.
- Neckerchief and woggle. Your Group’s colours, usually presented at investiture — a proud moment worth photographing.
- Bottoms and shoes. Sensible dark shorts or pants and closed shoes suit most activities; check with your Leader for camps and adventurous activities.
Buying a uniform
Uniforms are available from scoutshop.com.au, the official national Scout shop. Many Groups also run second-hand options — ask your Group Leader before buying new, especially if your child is close to moving sections.
Practical tips from leaders who’ve been there
- Name everything. Camp gear has a way of wandering.
- Buy room to grow — Scouting seasons are short but growth spurts aren’t.
- Keep it wearable. This uniform goes up climbing walls and into canoes.
