A realistic picture
This page will help you understand what volunteers actually do – not the glossy version, the honest one. Spoiler: it varies enormously, and there is room for every kind of contribution.
Working with young people
Section Leaders and their assistants plan and run programs for Joey Scouts (5–7), Cub Scouts (8–11), Scouts (11–14), Venturer Scouts (14–18) or Rover Scouts (18–25). Typically that means a weekly meeting, occasional weekends, and program planning now and then.
Behind the scenes
- Group Supporters and committees – fundraising, hall maintenance, equipment, finances.
- Activity helpers – driving, cooking, marshalling at events, sharing a skill.
- Admin and digital – records, newsletters, social media, grants.
- Trainers and mentors – supporting other adults through their learning.
How much time does it take?
Less than most people fear. Many behind-the-scenes roles need a few hours a month. Leadership roles ask for more, but Groups share the load – no one runs a Section alone.
Reflection question: if you had two spare hours a month, what kind of help would feel easiest – hands-on, organisational, or occasional?
