Supporting great SIA projects

Special Interest Areas (SIAs) let our young members chase what genuinely interests them — from coding to conservation, cooking to community service. This page brings together supporting material to help them plan, run and complete projects with confidence.

What’s here

  • Ideas sheets to spark project thinking across all six SIA areas.
  • Planning guides that walk members through setting goals and milestones.
  • Examples of completed projects from different age sections.
  • Leader notes on guiding without taking over.

Who it helps

  • Youth members choosing and shaping their own projects.
  • Leaders supporting SIAs across Joey Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers.
  • Parents and carers wanting to understand what an SIA involves.

How to start

Members pick an interest area, brainstorm a project with their Unit or Patrol, then record their plan — in Terrain or on paper. Small, achievable projects work best for a first attempt.

Try this

Ask your Unit this week: “If you could spend four weeks getting really good at one thing, what would it be?” Their answers are your next round of SIA projects.
