Outdoor Adventure Skills are a major part of the Scout program. They recognise a young person’s growing skills and confidence in outdoor activities over time.

This part of the program matters because Scouting is not only about talking or learning indoors. Young people grow by doing, especially outdoors, where challenge and teamwork come naturally.

What Outdoor Adventure Skills cover

Outdoor Adventure Skills include a range of streams, with Bushcraft, Bushwalking and Camping often treated as core areas in the Achievement Pathways.

As young people gain experience, they work through different stages. Each stage shows growing competence, confidence and independence.

How progress works

A young person does not master everything at once. They build skills step by step, through real activities, repeated practice and support from others.

  • Learning basic camp skills.
  • Becoming more confident in the outdoors.
  • Taking on greater responsibility in activities.
  • Helping others as their experience grows.

Why parents should care

Outdoor Adventure Skills help children and young people become more capable in the real world. They learn preparation, resilience, teamwork, problem-solving and confidence under practical conditions.

These are not just Scout skills. They are life skills that carry well beyond the next camp.
