Skills for snow and cold country
Alpine might sound far from south-east Queensland, but our region runs snow trips — and the Alpine stream prepares youth members for cold-weather adventures, from first snow play to ski touring in the alpine country.
What the stream covers
- Dressing for cold and wet conditions
- Camping and living comfortably in cold weather
- Snow safety and awareness of alpine hazards
- Skiing and snow travel skills
- Navigation in snow conditions
- Caring for yourself and your group in remote cold country
Early stages to advanced stages
The early stages focus on the basics — layering clothing properly, staying warm and dry, and enjoying a safe day in the snow. Advanced stages cover serious alpine skills: overnight snow camps, ski touring, route finding and managing group safety in challenging conditions.
Why it matters
Cold environments test skills most Australians rarely use. Youth members who complete Alpine stages learn preparation, adaptability and respect for conditions that can change quickly. It’s a genuine challenge — and reaching a summit or campsite under your own steam in the snow is unforgettable.
How units deliver Alpine
Alpine stages are usually delivered through region and state snow trips, with experienced alpine leaders providing gear advice and supervision. Units can begin with cold-weather skills at camp long before anyone sees a flake of snow.
Try this
Pack for a cold weekend using the layering principle — base, middle, outer. Could you stay warm with what’s in your wardrobe?
