Building a bigger, better Group

This page offers practical strategies for growing your Scout Group. No marketing degrees required — just consistent effort on the things that actually move the needle.

What actually works

  • Be findable. An up-to-date online listing, a sign at the hall and current contact details win more members than any poster campaign.
  • Run a bring-a-friend night. The simplest recruitment event there is — your members do the selling by having fun.
  • Show up locally. Street parades, school fetes, community working bees. Visible Scouts become joining Scouts.
  • Answer enquiries fast. A family that contacts three Groups joins whichever replies first. Usually yours, if you reply.
  • Make week one great. New families decide within two visits whether they belong. Plan those nights deliberately.

Grow adults too

Groups don’t just need youth members — they need leaders and helpers to sustain growth. Every new family is potential adult help; ask warmly and specifically.

Start small, start now

Pick one item from this list per term. Consistency beats bursts of enthusiasm that burn out by Easter.

Try this

Google your own Group tonight. Is the information correct and inviting? If not, fixing it is your first growth action — and it’s free.
