Scouting in the snow

This page covers Alpine Events — snow-based adventures organised through Scouting’s Activity Teams. For many Queensland members, an alpine trip is their first time seeing snow, and it’s every bit as magical as you’d hope.

What alpine Scouting looks like

  • Snow camps and trips. Skiing, snowboarding and snow camping experiences for older sections, typically in season.
  • Cross-country skiing. A wonderfully accessible entry point — quieter, cheaper and easier to learn than downhill.
  • Leader training weekends. Building the pool of adults qualified to lead alpine activities under national standards.
  • Equipment support. Advice and shared gear options that make snow trips affordable for more families.

The honest realities

Alpine activities are among the more logistically demanding programs we run — travel, specialised clothing, weather windows and permits all matter. That’s exactly why Activity Teams exist: experienced organisers handle the complexity so youth members just get the magic.

Safety matters double in the snow

Cold, altitude and remoteness demand respect. Alpine events run only with endorsed leadership, proper equipment lists and solid emergency plans.

Try this

Expressions of interest usually open well before winter. Ask your Group Leader about the next alpine opportunity — then start saving for thermals.
