Shared standards, safe adventures

This page summarises the safety principles behind all adventurous activities in Scouting. These aren’t arbitrary rules — each one exists because someone, somewhere, learned it the hard way. We get to learn it the easy way.

The principles we live by

  • Right people. Activities are led by adults with appropriate endorsements, supported by enough helpers for the group size.
  • Right plan. Every adventurous activity has a risk assessment and an approval before it runs.
  • Right equipment. Gear is checked, maintained and suited to the activity — no improvising with safety-critical items.
  • Right information. Someone not on the activity always knows where the group is and when to expect them back.
  • Weather respect. Conditions are checked and respected. Queensland weather changes its mind quickly; so can good plans.

When things don’t go to plan

Incidents and near misses are reported through Scouts Queensland processes — not to assign blame, but to help other Groups avoid repeating them. A near miss reported today prevents an incident next year.

Try this

Before your next activity, run a two-minute brief: who, where, how long, what to do if separated. Members of any age can repeat those four points back — that’s the test.
