Your passion, your project
The Personal Interest SIA is the catch-all for everything else — any hobby, pursuit or passion that doesn’t fit neatly into another area. Collecting, cooking, sport, genealogy, model building, photography, chess, car mechanics: if it matters to a young person, it can become their project.
How it works
Just like every SIA, the young person sets their own goals and plans how to reach them. A Personal Interest project might deepen an existing hobby or explore something completely new. They work through it at their own pace — sometimes solo, sometimes with friends or family — then review the results with unit leaders. The only real rule is that the interest belongs to them.
Ideas to get started
- Joey Scouts: start a nature collection (photos count!) and organise it into a display
- Cub Scouts: research your family tree and create a simple family history book
- Scouts: learn to cook six new dishes and host a dinner for your patrol
- Venturers: restore an old bike, guitar or piece of equipment from scratch
- Rovers: take a hobby like woodworking, astronomy or chess to the next level with a structured learning plan
- Any section: follow a sporting passion — train, track progress and reflect on the season
Why it matters
Personal Interest projects show young people that their passions have value. Turning “I’m really into this” into a planned, completed project is a quiet superpower they’ll use forever.
