Up, down and everything between
The Vertical stream is all about climbing, abseiling and rope-based adventure. It’s the stream that turns “I can’t do that” into “watch me” — often faster than any other.
What the stream covers
- Climbing on walls, boulders and natural rock
- Abseiling techniques
- Harnesses, helmets and safety systems
- Knots and rope work specific to vertical activity
- Belaying and supporting other climbers
- Rope rescue fundamentals at advanced levels
Early stages to advanced stages
Early stages focus on comfort and safety — fitting a harness, climbing an easy wall and trusting the rope. As young people progress, they learn belaying, tackle harder routes and longer drops, and eventually take responsibility for others as competent seconders and group supporters.
Why it matters
Few activities build confidence like vertical ones. Climbing asks young people to manage fear, trust their equipment and trust their teammates. Every small success compounds — and the problem-solving mindset transfers straight into school, sport and life.
How units deliver Vertical
Units access climbing through region climbing days, commercial gyms and qualified activity leaders who bring the gear and the expertise. No unit needs its own equipment to get started — just enthusiasm and a head for heights (which grows with practice).
Try this
Think of something that felt impossible six months ago. What changed? That’s how vertical progress works too — one move at a time.
