Confidence in and around water

Australia lives by its waterways, and Scouting is no different. The Aquatics stream builds swimming ability, water safety knowledge and rescue awareness — skills that matter at camp, at the beach and everywhere in between.

What the stream covers

  • Swimming skills and stroke development
  • Water safety and survival techniques
  • Recognising hazards at pools, dams, rivers and beaches
  • Basic rescue and reaching assists
  • Lifesaving skills and emergency response

Early stages to advanced stages

The early stages focus on water confidence and safety basics — knowing how to enter water safely, float and call for help. Advanced stages develop strong swimmers into capable lifesavers who can assess conditions, perform rescues and teach others.

Why it matters

Water safety is a life skill in Australia. Every stage gained makes a young person safer around water for the rest of their life — and opens the door to the fun streams too, like Boating, Paddling and all our region’s waterfront activities.

How units deliver Aquatics

Units use local pools, campsites with water access and region events to deliver Aquatics stages. Qualified activity leaders supervise all in-water activity, so progression is always safe and well supported.

Try this

Next time you’re near water, ask yourself: what are the hazards here, and who would I call for help?
