Milestones recognise active involvement in a diverse Scout program and the leadership growth that comes from experience. They are one of the clearest ways young people can see their steady progress over time.

This part of the badge system is important because it rewards ongoing participation and development, not just standout moments.

What Milestones mean

Each section has three Milestones. They reflect a young person’s participation in the program and the way they grow from joining in, to helping, to leading.

  • Participate.
  • Assist.
  • Lead.

How progress builds

As a young person moves through the Milestones, the expectations increase. They are encouraged to take a bigger role, contribute more and challenge themselves further than before.

That matters because leadership in Scouting grows through experience. Young people learn it by doing, not by sitting through a lesson.

Why parents should understand this

Milestones help explain how Scouting develops confidence and responsibility over time. Your child is not just collecting badges. They are learning how to take part well, support others and gradually step into leadership.

This is one reason the Scout program has lasting value. It helps young people grow in ways that reach far beyond the uniform.
