Getting checked, getting trained

This page explains the checks and training every adult needs before working with youth members in Queensland Scouting. We know paperwork isn’t why you joined — so here’s the shortest honest version of what’s required.

The essentials

  • Blue Card. Queensland’s working-with-children check, mandatory for all adults in child-related roles. Apply through the official Blue Card process with Scouts Queensland’s support; renewals matter, as cards expire.
  • Child-safe training. All adult members complete Scouts Queensland child-safe training covering the Code of Conduct, recognising harm and reporting pathways.
  • Leader training. Leaders complete structured adult training in addition to child-safe basics — practical skills, not just theory.
  • First aid. Many roles require or strongly encourage current first aid qualifications.

Making it manageable

  • Start applications early — processing takes time, and we’d rather you be ready before camp season.
  • Your Group Leader and District team will walk you through each step. Nobody does this alone.
  • Keep copies of certificates somewhere findable. Future-you says thanks.

Try this

Check your Blue Card expiry date right now. If it’s due within 12 months, start the renewal conversation this week — renewal is much smoother than reapplication.
