Values
At Moreton Region Scouts, our values shape how we learn, lead, and work together. They are not just ideas we talk about. They guide the way we support young people, welcome families, build community, and make decisions across our region.
Scouting is values-based from the ground up. The Australian Scout Promise and Law give us a simple, practical way to express those values in everyday life. They help young people and adults grow in character, responsibility, service, and respect.
What our values look like
In Scouting, values are meant to be lived. They show up in the way a Joey Scout includes someone in a game, the way a Patrol works together on camp, and the way adult volunteers model safe, respectful leadership.
- We encourage each person to build confidence, identity, and self-worth.
- We believe young people can take responsibility and contribute in meaningful ways.
- We value adults as mentors, role models, and trusted guides.
- We work to keep young people safe from harm and exploitation.
- We treat people with fairness, respect, and dignity.
- We care for the environment and use resources wisely.
- We believe strong communities are built through mutual support and service.
The Australian Scout Promise
The Scout Promise is a personal commitment. It invites each member to do their best, help other people, contribute to community, and live by the Scout Law. In Australia, members may choose the version of the Promise that best fits their beliefs, which helps keep Scouting inclusive while holding to shared values.
This matters because Scouting is not about getting everything right at once. It is about making a commitment, learning through experience, and growing over time.
The Australian Scout Law
The Scout Law gives us three clear principles that can be understood at every age and explored more deeply as members grow. It is simple enough for younger sections to begin using straight away, while still giving older youth and adults plenty to reflect on.
- Be Respectful – be friendly and considerate, and care for others and the environment.
- Do What is Right – be trustworthy, honest and fair, and use resources wisely.
- Believe in Myself – learn from my experiences and face challenges with courage.
Values in action
Our values come to life through ordinary Scouting moments. A Cub Scout helping pack away gear learns responsibility. A Venturer leading a project learns service and initiative. A leader listening well and setting clear expectations models respect and care.
That is one of the strengths of Scouting. Values are not taught only in theory. They are practised through camps, conversations, service, games, reflection, and shared responsibility.
Why values matter in Moreton Region
As a region, we want young people to leave Scouting with more than good memories. We want them to develop the habits, judgement, and character that help them contribute to their communities and navigate life well.
For adults, these values also guide how we lead. They remind us to be clear, fair, encouraging, and accountable. They help us build a culture where people feel safe, supported, and able to grow.
Growing step by step
We know growth takes time. No one masters these values overnight. In Scouting, progress happens through practice, reflection, encouragement, and the chance to try again.
That is why values matter so much at Moreton Region Scouts. They help us keep learning together, stay grounded in what matters, and build a strong Scouting culture for young people and adults alike.
