Understanding Badges

Badges help recognise progress, effort, skill development, and achievement in Scouting. They give young people visible milestones and encourage them to keep learning through action and reflection.

Not every badge means the same thing. Some badges reflect broad program progress, some show growth in outdoor skills, and others recognise personal projects, interests, or larger achievements over time.

For parents, the most important thing to know is that badges are part of the learning journey. They are designed to help young people set goals, try new things, reflect on what they have done, and build confidence as they move through the program.

Leaders support this process with the Unit, so families do not need to work it all out on their own. If you are unsure what your child is working towards, your local leaders can explain it in simple terms.
