Finding your way around Scouting’s policies
This page explains how Scouting’s policy framework works and where to find what you need. The structure is simpler than most volunteers expect.
How it’s organised
- Scouts Australia sets national policy fundamentals that apply across every branch.
- Scouts Queensland issues branch policies covering child safety, adult training, activities and operations in this state.
- Moreton Region Scouts adds local guidance — how things run here — always consistent with the layers above.
The ones worth knowing by name
- The Code of Conduct, which binds all adults.
- Child protection policies, underpinning our zero-tolerance approach.
- Activity standards, governing adventurous activities and nights away.
Practical advice from people who’ve looked
- Policies are maintained through official Scouts Queensland channels — check there rather than relying on printed copies or memory, as documents are updated.
- Your Group Leader or District Commissioner can usually answer “is there a policy on X?” within minutes.
- If two policies seem to conflict, ask before acting. Someone has hit this before; you’re not the first.
Try this
Next time a governance question comes up at a committee meeting, note it down and chase the answer afterwards. Building that habit makes you the calmest person in the room.
