Be the change, locally and beyond

Creating a Better World is the SIA for young people who want to make a difference. It covers community service, citizenship, peace, cultural understanding and social action — Scouting’s promise to help other people in action.

How it works

Youth members identify something in their community they’d like to improve — or a cause they want to support — then set goals and plan a project with their leaders. Projects can serve the local neighbourhood, the wider Scouting family or communities on the other side of the world. After finishing, they review the impact and reflect on what they learned about themselves.

Ideas to get started

  • Joey Scouts: make cards or care packages for residents at a local aged-care home
  • Cub Scouts: organise a food drive for a neighbourhood pantry
  • Scouts: plan and run a fundraising activity for a cause your unit votes on
  • Venturers: lead an awareness campaign about a global issue linked to the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Rovers: coordinate a community working bee or charity event end-to-end
  • Any section: learn about another culture through a partner Scout group overseas

Why it matters

Serving others builds empathy, leadership and civic pride. Young people discover their actions genuinely matter.

Try this

Ask yourself: if you could fix one thing in your community this year, what would it be?
